Hanging by a Thread: My Toughest Missions as a Helicopter Rescue Doctor

Description

Buckle up tight for an adrenaline-charged ride with doctor Emmanuel Cauchy on his most memorable missions with the world's busiest helicopter rescue service. Radioed in at a moment's notice, he and his team brave all conditions to reach survivors and victims, their helicopter frequently battered by winds as the pilot fights to keep control. Then the drop begins. And the fear kicks in. It's non-stop mission after mission in this marvellous suspense-packed memoir, from the near-death experience of plummeting into a bergschrund with a rescue victim, or seeing his fellow rescuer swept off the mountain before his eyes, to the rescue of Jamie Andrew trapped for five days on one of the most difficult ice faces in the Alps, and the climber who survived a fall to rival those of Jaws in James Bond. Cauchy vividly conveys the thrill of being whirled over vast jagged blades of gleaming ice and rock (and the heavy foreboding silence left when the thump of rotor blades disappears). But also the profound acquired sense of the fragility of life - the feeling of bones cracking and splintering in his hands as he treats a victim - and the realization that the 'white death' doesn't always take those she intends.

"All I did was ask you for a role-playing game. You never warned me I'd be pitched into it for real! And I asked you for hobbits on a Grail quest, and not one hobbit have I seen!" Hexwood Farm is a bit like human memory; it doesn't reveal its secrets in chronological order. Consequently, whenever Ann enters Hexwood, she cannot guarantee on always ending up in the same place or even the same time. Hexwood Farm is full of machines that should not be tampered with - and when one is, the aftershock is felt throughout the universe. Only Hume, Ann and Mordion can prevent an apocalypse in their struggle with the deadly Reigners - Hanging by a Thread: My Toughest Missions as a Helicopter Rescue Doctor free ebook or are they too being altered by the whims of Hexwood? A complex blend of science fiction and all sorts of fantasy - including fantasy football!! Joe Sorren's oil paintings redefine traditional naturalist scenery such as caves, reefs, and seashores, inserting a surreal mood through soft but eerie imagery, thick Impressionist-inspired brushstrokes, and childlike, yet animalistic, figures caught in mid-motion. The new gothic sentiment is subtly imbued in pale hued paintings that feature organic and distorted forms with exaggerated heads springing out of gelatinous blobs. Although the subjects are often childlike, the postures and weariness betray adult maturity, drawing a fine line between the vulnerable and precocious. Bulls and minotaurs parade guiltily with parasols and umbrellas through both Sorren's original paintings and the sculptures created in collaboration with Jud Bergeron. This monograph of work from 2004-2010 is published in conjunction with the exhibition Joe Sorren Ruby Lips Above the Water, Blowing Bubbles, Soft and Fine for the Grand Central Art Center at California State University, Fullerton.
